In a low scoring affair, Beaver built a double-digit lead at half, and then held on to hold off the Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs for the win, 38-35.

After taking a 22-11-halftime lead, the Lady Dusters appeared to be in control. But Heights jumped all over Beaver in the third, outscoring them 13-4 to cut the lead to just two heading to the fourth (26-24).

The game went back and forth in the fourth quarter with Beaver regaining the lead, 34-33, with 1:46 to play.

The Lady Dusters had built their early game lead with tough defense. Beaver led 11-7 at the end of the first, and held Heights to just four points in the second to double them up at half.

Neither team shot the ball well. Heights shot 34 percent form 2-point range compared to 31 percent for Beaver. The two teams combined to make just 3 of 16 3-pointers.

Beaver’s biggest advantage came on the boards, where they dominated, 31-19.

Beaver’s Jacinda Balderrama led all scorers with 13 points; Cassie Howell had 10, and Shelby Brown 7.

For Heights, Nayelly LaPoint scored 9, Ivon Amparon 8, and Jackie Loya and Raquel Longoria each had 7.

Beaver (10-13) will take on Turpin (3-19) Friday at Texhoma in the first round of the district playoffs.
