The Beaver Dusters hit big shots down the stretch to get the game to overtime, and played tough defense to defeat the Southwestern Heights Mustangs in double overtime, 71-67.

Garrett Weber hit a big three-point basket, and Kalen Gabel put back a basket after a missed free throw to help Beaver tie the game and get to overtime.

After a 4-4 first overtime, Beaver was able to pull out a win in the second overtime.

“I thought we played great defense at the end of the game,” Dusters coach Garrett Bebermeyer said.

The game had been tight throughout with Heights leading most of the game. The Mustangs led 14-10 with 3:01 left in the first, and 19-15 by the end of the quarter.

Beaver came back in the second, and tied the game at 28 with 4:21 left. Beaver led 37-36 at the half.

In the back and fourth game, Heights was able to score in the paint (22 points in the paint). Beaver was able to get to the line (14 of 22). And while Beaver outrebounded Heights (37-28), Heights collected 12 offensive rebounds.

Heights regained the lead, 44-42, with 3:30 left in the third, but trailed 49-46 heading into the fourth.

Heights again grabbed the lead in the fourth, but Beaver tied the game with 18 seconds left to send it to overtime.

Foul trouble played a role with Heights’ top scorer Clayton Chase fouling out in the fourth. Beaver’s Kalen Gabel was called for his fourth foul with six minutes left in the fourth, but played the rest of regulation and both overtimes without getting his fifth.

Beaver left the same five guys on the floor for the entire second half and both overtimes.

Beaver’s Garrett Weber led all scorers with 23 points, including a pair of triples. Kalen Gabel scored 18, Jorge Rivera 15, and Kaleb McDonald 11.

Ten different Mustangs scored with Clayton Chase leading the way with 14. Ben and Nate Johnsrud each added 13.

Beaver (12-10) will take on Turpin Friday at Texhoma in the first round of the district playoffs.

Heights (10-6) will travel to South Gray Friday.
