TYRONE-Before the Bobcats played the Felt Bulldogs Friday night, a sign was taped to a wall that read, "Chain the Bulldogs."
Whether they chained or contained Felt, Tyrone had leads of 21-15 after the first quarter and 45-23 at halftime. With a commanding 64-40 lead going into the fourth quarter, Tyrone head coach Clay Witt replaced his starters with younger, less experienced players off the bench. The freshmen and sophomores that relieved the top five outscored the Bulldogs 10-7 in the final stanza for the 74-47 win.
The Felt team that fell so easily to the Bobcats is ranked No. 20 in the state. Witt admitted he was nervous going in because of the Bulldogs' ranking.
"We hit a spurt defensively. We got several steals and they (Felt) never recovered after that," he said.
Payson Slater poured in 24 points and Austin Olivas 22 to lead Tyrone. Slater and Bryce Potter each recorded two 3-point goals. Olivas and Ethan Reece each had one 3-pointer.
Braden Schnaufer led Felt with 14 points and Jorge Rosas had 12. Austin Waters sank two 3-pointers and Rosas and Schnaufer each had one.
