The Forgan Bulldogs grabbed an early lead, and staved off a late run to defeat the Southwestern Heights Mustangs, 78-73.

Both offenses were in high gear as Forgan took a 23-18 lead by the end of the first. Heights scored the first five of the second quarter to tie the game with 6:20 left.

Forgan never gave up the lead, but Heights was able to cut it to just three by half, 39-36.

The Bulldogs tightened their defense in the third and held Heights to 13 points. Forgan scored 20 to go up by 10 heading into the fourth, 59-49.

The Mustangs outscored Forgan 24-19 in the fourth, but foul trouble put Heights in a bind. Heights post players, Frank Herrera and Clayton Chase, both fouled out and Forgan held on for the five-point win.

Forgan finished the game 17 for 35 from two-point range, 7 for 20 from three, and 23 of 31 at the free throw line.

Heights was 25 of 48 from 2-point, 7 for 16 from three, and 2 of 8 from the free throw line.

Forgan (19-1) will face Turpin (7-13) Friday, and Beaver (12-7) Saturday.

Heights (9-5) will host Stanton County Friday.
