After a disappointing first round loss in the Hi-Plains League Tournament, the Southwestern Heights Mustangs finished strong, defeating Elkhart 76-50 for their second straight win.
Heights jumped out early and led 22-7 by the end of the first quarter. Elkhart finally got going in the second quarter, outscoring Heights 19-15. Heights still led by double digits at half, 37-26.
The Mustangs offense exploded for 22 again in the third to take a commanding 59-36 heading into the fourth quarter.
Heights outscored Elkhart 17-14 in the final period to win by 26.
Heights was deadly in the paint where they were 9 of 11. Heights shot 57 percent overall from two-point range. Elkhart made just 39 percent inside the arc.
Both teams drained five shots from beyond the arc.
Heights outrebounded Elkhart 29-19, including 12 offensive rebounds.
Ben Johnsrud led the Mustangs with 20 points, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range. Clayton Chase scored 14 points on 7 of 11 shooting. Cody Jennings scored 14 on 5 of 5 shooting; Nate Johnsrud scored 9, and Alez Loya 8.
Elkhart’s Alex Gomez scored 22, including four 3-pointers, and Braden Harbour added 8.
Heights (9-5) is off until they travel to Forgan on the 29th.
