A three-point third quarter for the Southwestern Heights Lady Mustangs proved to be costly as the Elkhart Lady Wildcats won the third place game of the Hi-Plains Tournament, 45-42.
Heights led after the first quarter 12-8, and still clung to a 25-23 lead at half.
But the Lady Mustangs offense was completely shut down in the third quarter, with all three of their points coming at the free throw line. The charity stripe was Heights’ only bright spot, making 19 of 24.
The Lady Mustangs did stay within striking distance by holding Elkhart to just eight points in the third to make the score 31-28 in favor of Elkhart heading to the fourth.
Both teams scored 14 in the fourth, and Elkhart held on for the win.
Heights was just 2 of 7 in the paint against the much taller Lady Wildcats, and shot even worse from 3-point range, making only 2 of 18.
Ivon Amparan was the Lady Mustangs top scorer with 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Nayelly LaPoints scored 12 and grabbed 6 boards. Raquel Longoria scored 8, and Jackie Loya had 7 rebounds.
Miranda Beaver led Elkhart with 17, and Jentry Strothman added 13.
Heights (8-5) is off this week. Their next game will be the 29th at Forgan.
