Dodge City – A new organization conducted its inaugural meeting on Friday, Dec. 11, at Central Station. Latina Outreach and Leadership (LOL) is a group of Dodge City women who formed the organization in order to increase health awareness and education for Latinas in the community and to work with other civic and social groups to bridge cultural gaps.
The business of the formative meeting was focused on discussing 501c3 status and deciding on goals and mission for the group. The group also elected officers. The officers are: Elva Solis, President; Vicky Ortiz, Vice President; Yadira DeAnda, Treasurer; and Erica DeAnda Soltero, Secretary.
“We are excited about this new group and our mission of leadership and outreach. We feel that it is important for Latinas to work together to encourage, educate and support other Latinas,” said group president Solis. “But we also want to let people know what Latinas in Dodge City are doing in the community, and to serve as a point of contact for other organizations to work together toward common goals.”
The group agreed one of its major events for 2010 would be to host the 5th annual Dia de la Mujer Hispana. The event focuses on cancer awareness and education for women in the Latina community. The group will hold its next meeting on January 9th.
