It is budget time for local entities, and with Seward County and the City of Liberal having recently approved their own budgets, it is time for USD 480 to do the same during its next meeting this evening starting at 6:30.

The 2017-18 budget will be up for vote for the USD 480 school board as the first item of new business, and staff will be recommending the board approve it.

The board will also be revisiting requests for the purchase of a dynamometer (a request from the athletic training department) and the purchase of discovery room furniture for $65,287.88 from Southern Office for Sunflower Elementary School and Cottonwood Elementary School.

Liberal High School Principal Ashley Kappelmann will also be on hand this evening to present a request for the addition of two counselor assistant positions at the high school.

The board will also be hearing requests for replacing a couple items in the district, including the HVAC unit at the Central Office and a washer/extractor for the high school laundry facility. Bids will be sought from local vendors for both these requests.

“The replacement unit itself is estimated to cost $10,500. A crane will be required to set the unit and that cost is a variable. The department is seeking $15,000 in authorization to allow for crane time and other variable costs,” the agenda information noted. “A washer-extractor unit at LHS laundry facility down time and repair costs has recently increase dramatically and the department is seeking authorization for replace this unit.   Estimated cost for the unit is $10,400 plus shipping costs. The department is seeking $11,500 to cover shipping costs and incidentals.”

To conclude new business, the board will discuss condemnation case 15-CV-20, with staff recommending the board approve the settlement agreement between USD 480 and Tree Street Development LLC and authorize payment of $74,900 to Tree Street Development, LLC.
